Today I well and truly stepped outside of my comfort zone. I took part in a FitSteps flash mob in our new city centre.
This was the first time I have performed in front of a crowd since my GCSE drama performances.
I took up FitSteps last year with 2 friends from work. I had a great time and went back week after week. However my work changed and I struggled to get to class, but I was determined to return when I got a job closer to home.
Fortunately in May I returned to working in the county and I could go back to FitSteps. Unfortunately my friends had also changed jobs and were no longer able to attend. I was a bit anxious about returning on my own but our instructor Laura is really lovely and I knew I would be welcomed back with warmth, and I was.
Laura is one of the original FitSteps accredited instructors and she is also trained to teach others in Iain Waite and Natalie Lowe's absence. Laura loves performing and watching others grow. She also has big ideas!
I received an email out of the blue explaining her latest idea and that we were to keep it quiet. Laura wanted to do a flash mob and we had two weeks to learn the routine! Having missed the class for some time I wasn't familiar with some of the new dances but I did my best to keep up with the others.
The morning of the event I was truly having second thoughts. This was very public and I have two left feet. However I convinced myself to go and support everyone. I reminded myself that the classes are attended by people of all ages and abilities. I put on my signed FitSteps t shirt and I did my best.
I have to admit I struggled, my lack of coordination showed and I was flagging half way through the 15min performance. I enjoyed it to a point and I'm glad I did it, however I think I may just stick to the classes for now until I am fitter and more confident with the moves.
Well done to everyone who took part today and promoted a brilliant class. If you want to learn more and find your local FitSteps class visit fan.fitsteps.co.uk
